- Graduate of the Kastoria High School, has studied Law at the Aristoteleion University Of Thessaloniki Law School (Honors) and has followed post-graduate studies at the University of Bonn (Germany) where he also attended courses in Economics and worked as Scientific Associate.

Parliamentary Activities
• In 1985 he was elected MP (represent of the PASOK party) in the Prefecture of Kastoria and has been re-elected ever since.
• 2004-2009: Vice President of the Greek Parliament.
• President of the Greek Parliament (since 15-10-2009).
Political/Social Activities
• Founding Member of PASOK (Panhellenic Socialist Movement).
• He served as Secretary for the Sector of Education of PASOK, as well as Secretary for PASOK’s sector for Greeks living abroad.
• He was nominated by PASOK for the post of MP in 1977 and 1981 in the Prefecture of Kastoria.
• In 1984-1985 he served as General Secretary in the Ministry of National Education and Religion in the sector of People's Education.

• Minister for Macedonia and Thrace,
• Minister for Home Affairs,
• Alternate Minister of National Education and Religion,
• Deputy Minister at the Ministry of Culture (Responsible for the Sector of the Youth, for the Greeks Living Abroad and for People’s Education),
